- [Little Loco Arrives, a picture story book for children.](https://sdr1825.org.uk/product/little-loco-arrives/): Little Loco Arrives  Written by Caroline Hardie and Illustrated by John Pickin  Published July 2026. 24pp. Paperback.  The book is suitable for children aged 6-7ish or younger children to be read to. It can be used in schools from Reception to Year 4 (and sometimes Year 5).    The Stockton & Darlington Railway was the start of our modern railway network which went on spread across the world. Little Loco Arrives is the prequel to Little Loco's BIG Day.    It tells the true story of the events on the 18th of September 1825 when Little Loco, later known as Locomotion No.1, arrived on the world’s first modern railway – the Stockton & Darlington Railway. Designed by George Stephenson (George the Genius), Little Loco’s journey from the locomotive factory in Newcastle to the level crossing at Aycliffe Lane, near Heighington, took two days.    When Herald the Horse realises that this ‘iron horse’ is stronger than he is, he is worried that he will soon be out of a job. What will happen to Herald and all the other horses who helped to build the new railway? And who will be the first passengers carried by Little Loco? Not grown-ups, that’s for sure.    The author, Caroline Hardie, is an archaeologist and a specialist in the history of the Stockton & Darlington Railway. She is also a Trustee and editor for the Friends of the Stockton & Darlington Railway. John Pickin is also an archaeologist specialising in industrial archaeology.

The station master's pen is made from timber taken from the 1871 station master's house in St. Helen Auckland. The fine grain shows it was a slow growing tree once made into roof timbers and now made into this beautiful, sleek pen. The metalwork is a mellow golden colour; the pen has a twist top and contains a Parker style refill with black ink.These special pens have been made to help the appeal to Save Heighington Station, the world’s earliest railway station. They are made by Andrew Simmons, a descendant of John Falcus Carter who designed and oversaw the building of the station between 1826-7.  As these pens are hand made and taken from historic timber, there will be slight variations to the grain on each pen.

- [Little Loco's BIG Day a picture story book for children about the opening day of the S&DR](https://sdr1825.org.uk/product/little-locos-big-day/): Little Loco’s Big Day  Written by Caroline Hardie and Illustrated by John Pickin  Published November 2023. 24pp. Paperback.  The book is suitable for children aged 6-7 or younger children to be read to.  ‘Little Loco’s Big Day’ is the uplifting tale of the first locomotive, now known as Locomotion No.1, which ran on the Stockton & Darlington Railway. Steam powered with a mighty hoot, the nervous Little Loco has to pull wonky waggons along the railway on the opening day in 1825. Trouble brews when the wonky waggons grumble because they want to be pulled by horses, not locomotives. Herald the Horse is worried that he will be replaced by Little Loco and put in a horrible home for hopeless horses.  The book also has activities and at the end the fun facts tell the real story. There is a web site associated with it, where other activities can be found and even a song sung by a horse. The pictures are hilarious with lots of things to point at – look out for piles of steaming poo and a singing cat!          
- [A3 print of the Opening Day of the Stockton & Darlington Railway by John Dobbin](https://sdr1825.org.uk/product/print-opening-day-of-the-stockton-darlington-railway-dobbin/): These prints were donated to The Friends of the S&DR by Darlington Borough Council. They were found when clearing out the Head of Steam Museum ready for major investment works to turn it into Hopetown. They were printed in 1975 by Darlington Borough Council as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations and the print was taken from the original painting which the council owns.    The print will be delivered rolled into a cardboard postal tube.          
- [A3 map of the Stockton & Darlington Railway by Bob Hattersley](https://sdr1825.org.uk/product/map-stockton-darlington-railway-hattersley/): Digital print from a limited edition hand drawn map researched and created by the late Bob Hatterlsey (1949-2010). The map is printed on to high quality art paper at A3. It will be posted in a triangular tube (think Toblerone!). This map has been made available by Jean Hattersley so that profits from the sale can be split between the Friends of the S&DR and her chosen kidney cancer charity.

- [British Trains of Yesteryear (pre-owned)](https://sdr1825.org.uk/product/british-trains-yesteryear/): A Pictorial Recollection of the Pre-1923 Railway Scene edited by Ellis, C. Hamilton. Published London: Locomotive Publishing Co Ltd., 1961. Unpaginated, illustrated with numerous photographs. Dust jacket torn (see photo), but hardback cover in excellent condition. 25/- written in pencil on inside front along with a feint date stamp.  A lovely trip down memory lane.   
- [Railway Marvels (vintage)](https://sdr1825.org.uk/product/railway-marvels-vintage/): Railway Marvels hardback book for children by Cecil J. Allen, first published c.1928, but this is a new and revised edition. It's full title is 'Railway Marvels. The Wonderful Railway Engineering Progress of One Hundred Years, Illustrated and Described for Children.' Previously belonged to Peter Holmes who was given this for his 4th birthday on the 16th February 1933 by Kenneth. It did the job because Peter became a lifelong railway enthusiast and went on to publish books about the Stockton & Darlington Railway. So if you want to enthuse someone about railways and have hours of interest yourself, then this ancient and delightful book, could become your companion too. We suggest that it is a little grown up for day's 4 year old though. Beautifully illustrated in colour and black and white and full of stories, descriptions, technical details and just everything you could want to know about Railways. If we had more storage space we'd hang on to this lovely, fully provenanced book.    The book covers are a little scuffed as you can imagine with it being so old. The binding is also beginning to come away (see photos), but Peter took care of his book and there are no pen marks or scribbles, just a little yellowing with age. Like all 90 year olds it needs gentle handling!
- [Preserved Railway Coaches by Michael Harris (pre-owned)](https://sdr1825.org.uk/product/preserved-railway-coaches/): A small hardback book with a dust jacket (price not clipped - was £3.75), published in 1976 (first edition). 208pp, fully indexed. This was the first complete record of preserved railway coaches and features some S&DR ones. Full technical and historic details are supplied. This was undoubtedly a useful resource for Dr Peter Holmes when writing his book on Passenger Traffic on the S&DR. Excellent condition.
- [Wills Cigarette Album of Railway Engines (vintage)](https://sdr1825.org.uk/product/wills-cigarette-album-railway-engines/): In the 1930s smokers were encouraged to collect cigarette cards which were inside their packet of cigarettes, on various themes and mount them in an album by Wills, a branch of the Imperial Tobacco Company. The album cost one penny, but the health costs were probably somewhat higher. This album was for cards featuring railway engines and starts with the big names running in the UK and then moves on to international engines. There's no need for you to light up though, you can have this lovely set, minus only two cards, for a smoke-free tenner. Any lingering smell of smoke has long gone.....

Johnston. This is No.4 in the series and covers the Great Western Railway. First edition 1966 hard back binding in publisher's original dark grey covered boards, blocked and lettered silver back. 8½'' x 6''. Dust jacket. Contains 144 pp with monochrome archive photographs throughout. Excellent condition book in good condition dust wrapper (some very slight wrinkling of the top edge), not price clipped 25/-.  The added interest of this volume is that its previous owner (Dr Peter Holmes) slipped his hand written (in pencil) record of locomotives seen inside - a little bit of added history.

- [Shire Book of Industrial Narrow Gauge Railways (pre-owned book)](https://sdr1825.org.uk/product/industrial-narrow-gauge-railways/): This 32-page volume is an introduction to the fascinating world of industrial narrow gauge railways; typical of all Shire books it is a slim volume designed to introduce the reader to the subject but with further reading options towards the end. It examines those railways in Britain that served industry and had a track gauge smaller than the British 'standard gauge' of 4 feet 8 1/2 inches. Whether they were temporary contractor's lines or more permanent installations, these meandering, often poorly maintained railways have a special fascination. This book deals in turn with the locomotives, the rolling stock and the track, describing their development. It pays tribute to the inventors of an earlier age and to the more recent groups of enthusiasts who have been keeping the 'narrow' tradition alive.  Black and white illustrations. - [Eric Treacy by John Peart-Binns (pre-owned book)](https://sdr1825.org.uk/product/eric-treacy-john-peart-binns/): The biography of a well-known Bishop who's second love was railway engines. indeed he was known as the Railway Bishop. His enthusiasm and skill as a photographer gained him a national reputation and his books of photographs sold in their thousands. On 13 May 1978 he photographed one of his favourite engines, Evening Star and then collapsed on Appelby Station. For him it was a wonderful way to go. There were many moving tributes by railway people - subsequently an engine was named after him. Hardback in dust jacket - excellent condition, 272pp with some of Treacy's photos of locomotives.
