The Quayside at Cottage Row was the terminus for the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825. The railway company’s wharf, offices and warehouses were located here. Such a significant location was also where the company chose to end the opening day journey.
The train arrived at Stockton at a quarter to four in the afternoon of the 27th September 1825 and seven guns on the wharf each fired three times to create a 21 gun salute. Mr Meynell’s band from Yarm played God Save the King and the assembled crowds cheered. The passengers and workers left the waggons and the dignitaries stepped out from the passenger coach Experiment. The band led the crowd to the Town Hall on the High Street, where the workers dispersed to various hostelries and those lucky enough to have an invitation to the banquet, entered the Town Hall.
