The Stockton & Darlington Railway opened on the 27th September 1825. This was the start of the modern railway network that went on to cover the rest of the UK and the world.

The 26-mile-long mainline was located in North-East England in the historic County of Durham. It ran from the coal mines near Witton Park to the River Tees at Stockton, via Darlington and Yarm where there were two branch lines. Within the next five years it had an additional three branch lines at Croft, Haggerleases and Middlesbrough. Over the following decades, as railways spread across the world, the S&DR also expanded its network of tracks reaching as far as Barnard Castle, Tebay, Redcar, Saltburn and Weardale. It was amalgamated with the North Eastern Railway in 1863.

Here are a number of reviews and comments we have received since the book was published:

We have just received our copy of your new book and we are both delighted with it. Not only are the photographs so sharp and so well lit, it looks as though the photographer knew exactly which angle would be best in every photo. We explored various bits of the S&DR during the 150th anniversary year, so these photos bring back many happy memories for us. Your text is so readable and so focussed on getting to the point that the general reader will enjoy reading it and will come away well informed. It’s a refreshing antidote to the tv historians’ approach! Hope you are pleased with it too!

I have now received my preordered copy of your book with Peter Giroux photographs and I think it is brilliant.
I have yet to read it all but I think the format and the great mix of old and new illustrations following the course of the line during the early years is just right.
So thank you for delivering this worthwhile project and for your ongoing hard work.

I can’t believe what a fantastic job you’ve done with this book! It really does look great. You must be so proud of it. Well done and thank you for giving us the opportunity to support you with this.

Just wanted to say that the books I ordered arrived safely and, my what a beautiful job has been done with them. Congratulations of the first order on such a top quality item, well compiled, superbly written and beautifully illustrated. I will cherish my copy and am proud that the Institute has added a copy to its collection.

I’m delighted to report that your new book has arrived on Platform 9 and 3/4 in a most timely and orderly fashion and, I see, signed by you and Peter to boot! Thank you so much to you both and of course to your society colleagues. It is a fantastic project and a marvellous book which I’m looking forward to reading. I’m sure it will prove very successful.

Just to say – I just received the book and it is great! I have already learnt new things. I had not seen the Wigston painting or the undated oil painting. Good choice of photographer – I have been following Peter Giroux’s work generally. A lovely thing to have.

What a spectacular book! I’m enjoying it immensely and learning so much about a subject I thought I already knew. Beautifully illustrated and so engagingly written – it will immediately become a treasured collector’s item.

Received my copy today and an excellent production.
